Has anyone had any training yet? What will we be expected to do for the EV visit? Common opinion is that it will be similar to the old GNVQ style, however, it seems that this varied from centre to centre – any thoughts?

Hi, I am due to teach Unit 24 – criminal law relating to business but am really struggling to get my head around P2 – describe the liability of business organisations and their employees for crimes. Does this mean examples of when a business can be convicted of criminal offences eg. bribery, corp manslaighter, H & S etc. and then when employees can be liable for crimes committed whilst in the course of employment?
Any help/advice would be greatly received!

Hi I’ve taught this unit and asked a law teacher about this bit! It means strict and absolute liability. I think this is in the unit content but it doesn’t make it clear that it links to P2 Hope this helps.

Anyone had any “issues” arising from EV type visits regarding assignment briefs? I’ve been criticised recently for, basically, setting them from the criteria grid, rather than the “guidance for assessment” and I don’t feel that they always necessarily tie up. e.g. Level 3, Unit 1, D2 – the guidance states “make justified recommendations for the development of business activities in the two different business environments” – but in the Pearson book the suggested assignment makes no mention of 2 different business environments, and nor do a couple of publicly available assignments that I’ve seen. Hi Jon. We have not had an EV visit yet but we have had this conversation in our department many times. I absolutely agree with you that the criteria grid and the guidance for assessment often do not tie up. In fact, it is obvious on some units that the criteria grid has changed over the year but the guidance has not been updated. There is one unit, can’t remember which off the top of my head, where the guidance for assessment refers to criteria that no longer exists i.e. it makes suggestions for M3 but there is no M3. In addition, the content is quite often irrelevant to the criteria grid too. I like BTEC but I wish Edexcel would sort these inconsistencies out.
The conclusion we came to was that the criteria grid was the most important. The content should be covered but will not necessarily be included in the criteria. The guidance may or may not be of any help.
I think on unit 1 we agreed that it could be 2 different countries e.g. China and the UK or 2 different stages in the economic cycle. I hope this is ok because it’s done now!
I agree with you about the grid & guidance not necessarily matching up, and I think I also recently read through a unit with that missing M criteria. What has concerned me is that I asked 2 collegaues who EV elsewhere about my own EV feedback and both seemed to focus on the assessment guidance – to the extent that the word guidance is being misused, in my opinion; they seemed to be treating guidance words like “could, should” as “must”. Does anyone know if EVs are being advised to do this, without this necessarily being passed on to assessors? Example Unit 3 criteria P3/M2/D2 – I was criticised for not basing it on my own institution’s market research and plans which in the spec reads “could be based on…” – any thoughts from anyone on this?

has anyone done the osca for level2?
I have done the test for level 3 business and have been accredited (results last Friday). I don’t see the point in doing the level 2 test as at some stage your centre may wish to offer the level 3 qualification. The only difference is the assesment decisions with regards to the learners work, the rest of the process e.g the IV side of things is exactly the same for both levels. It is a most confusing test and very subjective. The pass mark is rumoured to be around 70% and make sure you put comments in the “optional” boxes in case of a borderline decision, which would be the basis of discussion with an appointed EV if that needed to be the case.

Hi. Im in the same boat. How far have you got in completing Unit 1?
I have taught the first part about organisational structure, aims and objectives etc… The students have done P1-4, M1 and D1. I’m moving onto the economics side next term – which is the part I’m less familiar with, so going to have to spend half term reading up on it all.
What did u ask the students to do for P3 and P4? Would it be ok to share ur assignment?
For P3 and P4, they had to talk about the organisational structure of the companies and how these structures affected decisions that were made etc… They had to link it back to the companies aims and objectives and missions and values
Which org structures did they use? I can’t find any that have all the depts listed in the spec

Hi all,
Writing some assignments for Unit 17 & am stuck at the first hurdle!! For P1, they have to present their business idea – in the soec it breaks it down to certain ‘criteria’ they have to meet. One of these simply says ‘business planning’. I have checked the text books & there is very little in either one I have.
Anyone any ideas what is required as it seems very vague??? I’m sure I don’t need to tackle a full business plan at that stage??

I am currently writing new assignments for next year (rather annoyingly as we only started BTEC this year!) luckily I am finding that many of the units have shared info with this year’s units. We are trying to go with the units that we currenlty have info for but we keep finding random new bits thrown in. e.g. in Unit 1. Has anyone got any fun ideas of how to teach the 2nd part if Unit 1 about the Government’s role?
I went on the Edexcel residential launch event last Saturday and was shocked to realise that I hadn’t read Page 9 of the new Level 2 Spec properly, it’s really important to choose units which add up to 60 credits, so no more 6 x units per year, it’s a minimum of 8
So I’ve ordered an inspection copy of the Heinemann textbook & teacher resource pack in the hope of finding inspiration there, at least for the Mandatory Units. Am I the only dur-brain who didn’t read the Spec properly?!

I have draft assignments for unit 1, 2, 11, 12 – these are based on briefs I originally sourced from steaming custard! Thanks to the original poster. I will pass them around for comment and get them Internally verified. I would welcome anything – BTEC 1st Dip units (I will probably have to offer an ICT unit to make up the credits) and BTEC National units.

We are just getting going for next year in our centre. I am not teaching on the First but am doing 5, 10 and 36 on the National. I’m trying to integrate the accounting bit of 2 (Business Resources) into 5 (Business Accounting). I’m hoping to get some of the market research from 36 (business planning) done in 10 (market research). Don’t know if that’s ok or not! I got the impression from a training session that combining units was supported.

We will be doing the diploma so I am going to start with the four mandatory units but then have to decide on where to gain the remaining 40 credits from. I would suggest you do Units 7&8 (5 credits each) as very easy to address by role plays & presentations which reduces the paper trail and marking time.
I would also suggest Units 11 (customer service), Business online and Business Enterprise. Tempted to trade Business online with Unit 19 – Promotion & Branding
